Hatchery Effluent Treatment Systems

Phosphorus discharge to freshwater recipients has recently become an issue of greater importance and increased regulatory control.

To meet this challenge, Atlantech^® Companies has developed the Hatchery Effluent Treatment System (HET). The Atlantech^® HET system will maximize solids removal, minimize sludge production and minimize phosphorus discharge.

The HET system is composed of an Atlantech^® Rotary Drum Microscreen Filter for primary solids removal combined with an Atlantech^® Microscreen Belt Filter for solids de-watering.

Rotary Drum Microscreen filter technology is very effective at removing solids from high flow rates. However, this technology tends to produce large volumes of backwash water that are high in water content. In fact, backwash water tends to have total solids concentrations ranging from only 0.03 to 0.05%. In most applications, this backwash water is directed to a settle tank where significant leaching of phosphorus from solid phase to liquid phase can occur.

To alleviate this phosphorus leaching issue, the HET System combines Rotary Drum Microscreen technology with the Atlantech^® Microscreen Belt Filter. Belt filter technology is very effective at removing high solids concentrations from low flow rates. Backwash wastewater is directed from the rotary drum to the Atlantech^® Microscreen Belt Filter where solids are removed immediately, de-watered and pumped to a sludge containment system for future disposal. The Atlantech^® Belt Filter produces highly concentrated sludge of approximately 10% solids. This solids concentration is much higher then that achievable within a settle tank. As such, not only does this technology significantly reduce phosphorus emissions, but also reduces sludge disposal costs.

The Atlantech^® HET System also has the added benefit of maximizing removal of BOD, TSS and nitrogen.
