In intensive aquaculture operations, carbon dioxide saturation can be a regular problem. As fish respire, they consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide. For every 1 kg of oxygen consumed, salmonids will release approximately 1.4 kg of carbon dioxide to the surrounding water.

Carbon dioxide is higly soluble and as such can quickly accumulate to toxic levels if not properly managed. In general, carbon dioxide levels above 20 ppm can lead to stress. Although mortality may not occur, even at levels of 30-40 ppm, the stress created from these elevated levels can lead to substantial mortality upon transfer to ocean cages.

The Atlantech^® C02 Stripper is specifically designed for carbon dioxide stripping in intensive aquaculture operations. With its high gas to liquid ratio of 10:1 the Atlantech^® C02 Stripper is also very effective at combating supersaturation of most known gases such as nitrogen. Other features of the Atlantech^® C02 Stripper include:

• Unique internal design maintains G:L ratio while reducing solids build up;
• Counter current air to liquid enhances gas removal; and
• Specific dimensions and G:L ratios will depend on production, fish species and life stage, salinity and desired gas to be removed.
