Millions of farm-salmon in south Chile moved because of the volcanic eruption

Some rivers in the area have turned into ashy sludge.

Chile’s National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca) authorized the transfer of more than five million salmon from three farms in the south of the country. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure because of the eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic range and possible pollution of rivers and lakes.

The salmon, belonging to the farms located in the lakes Puyehue and Ranco will be moved to safer areas.

Chilean salmon exports increased 50% as of May

Chile: The Chilean exports of salmon and trout totalized US$ 1,244 million in the first five months of this year, representing an increase of 50.1% compared to the same period of 2010, when the industry had returns for US$ 829 million.
